![]() ![]() The farther away they get, the closer together they appear, the grayer they look, and the less detailed and distinct they become.Īs with every other watercolor subject, the best way to figure out how to portray ocean waves is to sit in front of the real thing and observe. The closer the waves are to the foreground, the larger, more colorful, and more detailed they are. Keep in mind that waves have perspective. I added a glaze (lots of water with a little paint) of a mixture of ultramarine blue and a bit of burnt sienna after the first blues were dry. To capture the ocean waves in Figure 11-4, I painted around the whites of the splashing water using a variety of blues. Sure, you can measure with a ruler, but just trust your eye for the most part. Waves are fairly parallel to each other too. ![]() But even if the waves take on one of these diagonal or vertical movements, they have a horizontal base. This painting has horizontal waves, diagonal waves toward the shore, and vertical crashing waves on the rocks. Of course when the waves crash and splash against the rocks, they splatter everywhere, as they do in Figure 11-4. Waves are generally horizontal and parallel to the horizon. A wave and its parts are shown in Figure 11-3. Foam can be a line or a pattern of white that allows the water's darker color to show through in a calm wave. The white stuff you see when the wave crashes on the shore is foam. The center is the eye and appears as the lightest area where the sun shines through. The top or crest is what you see as the highest point. Only half of it appears above the horizon the other half is underwater. 46:40 refers to the amount of time it takes to complete a task when you have already blended a little circle, and 59:08 refers to the amount of time it takes to complete a task when you have not already blended a little circle.A wave is a complete circle of water. These two numbers refer to the amount of time, in minutes and seconds, that it takes to complete a task. We’ll be going back and forth between our colors, and our goal is to create a lovely, autumn-inspired piece that we can be proud of. We don’t want to be too heavy-handed with our brush, so a light touch will do. With these lovely fall colors, we want to make sure that we have a good amount of variation. We are going to be going back and forth a bit with our brush. You should start with cold muscles and gradually increase your heart rate and body temperature. A good way to warm up is to stretch your muscles and then do a light cardiovascular activity like walking or jogging. It’s important to warm up your muscles before exercising to prevent injury. ![]() And so this is a really great way to get very specific control over the shape of your curves. I’m actually changing the curvature of my curve. So if I hold down the option key and I click and drag on this, you’ll see that I’m changing the shape of my curve in a very specific way. But if I hold down the option or the alt key, I can actually change the shape of my curve in a very specific way. Now, if I were to just start clicking and dragging on one of these, I would start to see that I’m changing the shape of my curve. And you’ll see that when I do that, I get these little handles. I’m going to grab my direct selection tool and I’m going to select just these two anchor points right here. So watch what happens when I when I purposely connect these in round these corners. ![]() This will allow you to see the pencil lines underneath and sketch on top of them. To create a sketch using paint, you will need to water down the paint to make it more transparent. ![]()
